#RPGaDAY 2016: Day 10

I am participating in the #RPGaDAY2016 blog marathon hosted by BrigadeCon

What was the largest in-game surprise you have experienced? I was running a Pathfinder game from the Beginner Box for my kids and some of their friends. Players were like 7 to 11 years old. I took them through a dungeon haunted by the spirit of this evil wizard. They managed to avoid combats getting to his lair and as he threatened them and began to cast a spell, my youngest daughter asked him, "Why are you so angry and evil?".

I was dumfounded. My friends would have just rolled initiative and fought him. On the fly, I told them that his wife had died years ago and in trying to bring her back to life he had become corrupted and couldn't join her in Heaven.

They all felt bad for him and asked if they could find a ritual to send him to Heaven and make him good.  I was trying to fight back tears at their kindness and thoughtfulness. Needles to say that old wizard found his way to Heaven and his wife.

And I learned far more about gaming that day than they did.

Ashes Without Number

Even though my interest in the OSR has waned a bit I still really appreciate the work that Kevin Crawford has down with Stars Without Number...
