Legends and Lore for April 1st

Mike Mearls announced the introduction of a tier system to DnD Next today.  It decompresses the abilities characters have been getting at 1st level and spreads them out between levels 1 to 3.

While his reasoning makes some sense, I'm not very fond of it and my initial reaction is that it's lazy design.

The current playtest is pretty much the cat's meow to me.  Its a version of DnD I can see myself playing for years and years to come.  I'm comfortable with house ruling it and making my own content.  And the presentation of "tiers" in 4E still leaves a bad taste in my mouth.

However, since I've enjoyed nearly everything WotC has presented to me in DnD Next I will give them the benefit of the doubt, assuming it's not an April Fool's Joke.

After all, I hated the Skill Die when I read about it, but it works great in play.

So go ahead and convince me, Mike.
