A to Z of How I Learned to Love D&D: F is for Fighter

My very first DnD character (under ADnD 2E) was a Fighter.

I'd like to tell you that I had always wanted to play a warrior, but I was hoping to make a wizard that night at Richard's apartment.

Sadly, I didn't have the attribute rolls for anything but a Fighter.  I think my highest roll was an 11, even rolling 4d6 dice and dropping the lowest number.

So I made a Fighter and they handed me the Complete Fighter's Handbook and I saw the Swashbuckler Kit and was sold.

Except I didn't qualify for the Swashbuckler Kit, either.

So I simply considered myself a swashbuckler with a lower-case "s" and chose the name Garamond.  You see, at the time I was a Graphic Design major and it is the name of a font.

The coolest part, that I remember, about being a Fighter was 1) weapon specialization (I wanted to be specialized with a rapier, but my DM wouldn't let me have one, so long sword it was) and 2) three attacks every two rounds--which was hard for me to wrap my head around back then.

I only played Garamond a few sessions, but he was my first DnD PC, and I still remember him.

I'd Really Like to Know D&D's 2026 Schedule, Wouldn't You?

It's January 2026 and currently we do not know what Wizards of the Coast is releasing in 2026. We think Dark Sun is on the way but we do...
